DOUGLASDALE – Through the successful conviction, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane highlighted the importance of police visibility.

Douglasdale police were successful in the conviction of a 26-year-old man who was sentenced on August 31.

Xhesha Sibanda (26) was sentenced by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court to 10 years’ imprisonment with seven years suspended for five years.

Sibanda was fined R2 000 or three months’ imprisonment and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Captain Mpho Tshetlhane of Douglasdale Police Station said the accused was arrested in Kya Sand along Inanda and Oleans roads on January 24, 2018. “Police came across two suspicious men. When they stopped their vehicle, the accused’s accomplice ran away. The police then searched the accused who was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.”

Tshetlhane also mentioned that the conviction and sentence show the importance of police visibility and stop-and-searches.

“The sentence given to the accused is an indication that the police are determined to ensure that the community of Douglasdale is and feels safe,” she concluded.
