Watch: Diepsloot residents embark on a service delivery protest

DIEPSLOOT – Residents in Diepsloot took their plight to the streets on the morning of August 27 to raise their concerns about the lack of service delivery.

Scores of protesting residents briefly barricaded roads with burning tyres and debris in Diepsloot Ext 7.

The protesters sang political songs in front of the multipurpose centre in Ext 7, demanding that Ward 113 councillor Abraham Mabuke not be elected for a third term.

According to the protesters’ group leader, Jaden Moreo, residents in Diepsloot can go for three months without electricity. He said unemployment was rife in the area, particularly among youth, while the councillor who has been at the helm of the ward allegedly failed to address their issues.

“People do not want councillor Mabuke. He’s been the councillor of Ward 113 for the past 10 years and yet he has not delivered,” claimed Moreo.

The residents embarked on the protest when the councillor apparently announced that he had signed to be elected for a third term. Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula confirmed the protest occurred early in the morning.

He said the protest was allegedly related to the recent ward councillors’ elections. “Protesters have dispersed… there were no injuries or damage to properties,” said Mathebula.
