The hippo was spotted while wandering around in Steyn City on about July 20 this year. When Steyn City Management Association (SCMA) learnt of the sighting, the movements of the hippo were tracked along the Jukskei River using cameras and infrared drones.

Marie Yossava, on behalf of the estate, said the hippo moved onto Steyn City’s golf course which was close to the residents’ homes. “With the safety of both the animal and residents in mind, SCMA contacted the relevant nature conservation authority to seek consent for its relocation.

“On Saturday 24 July, after obtaining the necessary permits, the hippo was captured under the supervision of trained veterinarians and representatives from nature conservation authorities

“However, the veterinarians responsible for the relocation later advised that the hippo sadly died while in transit as a result of breathing complications,” she said.

Head of SCMA, Richard Mitchell said the untimely death of the hippo was a blow to the team who was on the ground. “After a long strenuous day, we had hoped for a good outcome and a happy ending.”

Mitchell added, “The unfortunate death was a devastating blow to our team on the ground, as well as the specialised task team who had done everything possible to protect this hippo.”
