Chefs show compassion

SUNNINGHILL – In celebration of Mandela Day, communities throughout the country are encouraged to get involved in the #67000Litres campaign which sees many being given a warm meal of soup thanks to a food rescue organisation.

Despite the recent unrest throughout Gauteng and Durban, a nationwide initiative to feed many for Mandela Day helped thousands of people.

Chef with Compassion, a volunteer-based food rescue organisation launched their 67 000-litres campaign in 2020 when over 310 000 people received a hot meal in cities around the country.

This year, home chefs were encouraged to join in as the challenge is set again to donate cooked soup to those in need in their community.

Sunninghill resident and one of the founding members, Caroline McCann said the foundation was founded in May last year with the intent of meeting the drastic need which resulted during lockdown.

“Today the need is greater than ever. The communities we serve around Joburg on a daily basis are desperate for us to continue on Mandela Day and we are duty-bound to do so,” McCann explained.

Durban would not be taking part in the challenge due to the unrest. With that and Covid-19 cases taking a toll on the production of soup, community members are encouraged to do their bit.

“This year’s #67000litres Challenge has become about more than the need to feed people in honour of Madiba. It’s become about the indomitable spirit of South Africans everywhere. Now, as never before, we need to step up to meet Mandela’s call to take small actions every day.

McCann concluded, “We are called upon to make every day Mandela Day, and that is the philosophy that has driven Chefs with Compassion from the very beginning.

“We will not halt our operations, on Mandela Day or any other day, unless we are compelled to do. Thousands of men, women and children are relying on us for their only meal in a day.”
