MIDRAND – Mabulane said the suspects will flash their lights pretending to be police before hijacking motorists.

Midrand police have identified the N1 north and south as hijacking hotspots after a number of cases were recently reported at the station.

Spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, Constable Tshwarelo Eliot Mabulane said, “Suspects are identified to be driving three vehicles, two of which are a Toyota Avanza and blue Jeep with blue lights.”

Mabulane said the suspects would flash their lights pretending to be police before hijacking motorists.

The community is advised to take precautions especially between the hours of 9am and 12noon, specifically on the on-ramps and off-ramps of the highways, namely Olifantsfontein off-ramp on both sides. Another on- and off-ramp to look out for is Allandale Road and New Road.

Mabulane said Station Commander Brigadier David Molefi Tsotsotso had beefed up the station’s manpower in a bid to keep community members safe through joint operations with highway patrol, Metro police, Gauteng Traffic, National Traffic, SAPS Highway Patrol, the Flying Squad and the SAPS Midrand Crime Prevention and Tracing Squad.

“Crime intelligence is also on board to do the intelligence-driven operations to assist in this regard,” added Mabulane.

“We will not relax until the criminals are identified and linked with other possible crimes committed in Midrand.”

He advised motorists to not stop if they suspected bogus police but rather drive to the nearest police station or filling station.
