The youngster started dancing in 2018, and recently joined the Jozi Youth Dance Company. Speaking on the days’ events, she said it was the first time competing since she injured her knee in August last year. “I think the two days went extremely well. I had to give my knee some time to recover, so I took a break and started dancing in February again this year.”

She shared her reaction to hearing the competition results, “I was really very surprised as I was up against many talented dancers.”

Micaela also takes part in volleyball for her school. However, with her training for dancing taking place five days a week, she ‘does not get much time to do other extramurals’.

Since the pandemic affected many sporting codes and competitions taking place, strict regulations had been put in place for contact and non-contact sports. Micaela said dance training has been especially tough with the guidelines in place. “It is very challenging training, especially training with a mask on. Competing was not too bad as, fortunately, I could do my routines without a mask on.”

Looking ahead, Micaela said she would like to compete in the World Lyrical Dance Federation, “I missed the qualifiers but, hopefully, I can compete in the next one.”

She also hopes to travel more once she finishes her studies. “I would love to be a dancer on a cruise line. Travelling the world and getting paid to do what I love sounds like my kind of job.”
