Two suspects convicted following attempted murder

BLUE HILLS – Two suspects convicted of attempted murder, robbery and kidnapping.

The Midrand Police Station is proud to announce the conviction of two people involved in an attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping in 2018.

Spokesperson for the Midrand police Constable Thabiso Selowa said the initial incident took place on the evening of 25 August 2018. She said that one man plotted to kill his elderly uncle in order to take over and sell his Olievenhoutbosch RDP house.

The nephew, along with four other suspects, arrived at the victim’s home at 8pm where they found the uncle and female cousin who they kidnapped. The victim was taken to an empty field in Blue Hills, where they shot the elderly victim twice before leaving him for dead.

Selowa added that the suspects made their way back to the house in Olievenhoutbosch with the female cousin. They stopped at a petrol station on the way to the house.

The five suspects waited at the RDP house for the potential buyer who had been contacted earlier but before the suspects could sell the house, the uncle who had been shot earlier but miraculously survived, arrived at the house. Selowa said that the suspects later described the incident as seeing a ghost and immediately fled the scene.

The female victim immediately reported the incident to the police who, led by investigating officer Sergeant Ronny Mkhari, began their investigation.

The police approached the petrol station the suspects visited earlier and obtained the licence plate number of the driver.

Police then visited local taxi ranks where they arrested the driver of the minibus taxi and the nephew of the victim. The two were charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping and appeared in the Midrand Magistrates’ Court.

They were both found guilty on all charges and sentenced to eight years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder, three years’ direct imprisonment for kidnapping and eight years’ direct imprisonment for armed robbery.

The three other suspects are still at large and the police are continuing the investigation.
