Police spokesperson, Captain Tinyiko Mathebula confirmed the discovery of the body and that police were investigating the incident.

Joseph Mvelase, the Diepsloot Residents Association public relations officer, said the community was still in shock after the discovery of the body. He was one of the first community members to find out about the incident.

“The body was found where water passes through. People are wondering if there was any contact with our water supply, so everyone is still in shock,” he added.

Mvelase raised his concerns about the safety of the open field where the manhole is located.

He hoped the open land would be developed so it wouldn’t pose a safety risk. Mvelase said, “There are people travelling from one side to another crossing over through that open field at any time, including the early hours of the morning or even late at night, as people need to travel to work to support their families.”
