Man arrested for illegal possession of ammunition

MIDRAND – JMPD K9 Unit officers discovered 14 rounds of live ammunition after searching suspect's bag.

A suspect appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 26 January, this after allegedly being caught in possession of ammunition by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s K9 Unit.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the JMPD, said that while doing one of their routine checks on Olifantsfantein Road, the K9 Unit stopped a vehicle. It was discovered that it was an application-based taxi vehicle. While searching the vehicle, the officers requested the passenger to show what he had inside his bag which was on him. “While searching his bag, officers discovered two 9mm and 12 .357 Magnum rounds.

The suspect said that he was transporting the ammunition from Tembisa to Rosettenville, where he was going to sell it for R10 each,” said Minnaar. Midrand Police Station’s spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane confirmed that the man was detained at their cells after a case was opened at the station, adding that the suspect failed to give information on how he possessed the ammunition without having a licence.

“The suspect has made his appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, further investigations will take place,” said Mabulane. He concluded that the Midrand Police Station will continue enforcing the law and keeping the community safe in the process.
