Man accused of reporting false crime in Midrand

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station detectives obtained footage during their investigations which found that the complainant was lying about the case he reported.

Police arrested a man on 28 October after he allegedly lied to the police about a crime incident in which he portrayed himself as a victim.

According to the Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela, the suspect claimed to have been hijacked on the N1 highway at the Olifantsfontein off-ramp at around 3.45am on 28 October.

Tlamela explained, “The complainant said that he was heading for Limpopo with a delivery of incubators.

She added, “Just before the Olifantsfontein off-ramp, he [said he] was blocked by a Toyota Quest and the alleged suspects pointed at him with firearms and took him to a place unknown to him.”

The man claimed that when they arrived at the designated place, he was tied up with a tape along with other people, including a security guard.

“He added that the place was filled with parked trucks. [He further claimed that] the suspects robbed him of R400 cash. He claimed that after more than an hour they untied themselves and the security officer at that place, [which is still] unknown and called the police.”

Tlamela said that during their investigation, the detective discovered that the vehicle was never stopped on the N1 highway.

“Footage obtained from a Sanral [South African National Roads Agency] gantry proved the suspect’s narrative wrong. The complainant confessed to this afterwards,” said Tlamela.

Tlamela concluded that cases of defeating the ends of justice and perjury were opened and the suspect was arrested.
