New Blue Hills Park is almost ready

BLUE HILLS – The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo have finally removed the large amount of rubble and waste illegal dumped on the new Blue Hills Park.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has been hard at work at the new Blue Hills Park with the illegally dumped rubble and garden waste removed.

Region A manager for City Parks Joseph Ndou said that the entity has already installed benches and bins on the property. He added that they have appointed a service provider for park signage and are in the process of appointing a service provider to instal bollards which will prevent drivers from parking in the park. The entity will also start advertising to employ a service provider to instal playground equipment in the park.

Large quantities of rubble and waste that had been dumped illegally appear to be the biggest issue. Ndou said they used a loader and four, four-ton trucks to remove the waste at a cost of approximately R25 000.

“The illegal dumping was a mixture of building rubble and garden waste, which posed a safety hazard for residents who live near open spaces and hence, we undertook this process of removing it especially now with Covid-19, to ensure that residents are safe and have a clean environment.

“The people who are dumping are local residents who live close to the park and who are undertaking building improvements on their properties – they want to cut costs by not hiring skips to dump building rubble. ”

Ndou added that they have formed a partnership with a security team to assist with patrolling the area, to ensure that people don’t dump illegally anymore. “We will be roping in the Metro police and park rangers to enforce by-laws and patrol.”
