Dainfern man (52) who owes City Power R463K is arrested for bribery

DAINFERN – The suspect was arrested after he gave the police and City Power technicians R1500 to reconnect power in his house.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Undercover Unit arrested a 52-year-old Dainfern resident on 1 October during a sting operation.

The arrest follows after the suspect tried to bribe City Power technicians to reconnect power in his house after it was cut off. According to City Power, he owes the power utility R463 000. “The suspect is one of the 19 customers who were targeted in a cut-off operation on Wednesday [30 September].”

“The customer offered technicians R5 000 to be reconnected,” said Issac Mangena, City Power spokesperson in a statement. “The technicians agreed to come back the following day to reconnect him and get the money, the police were alerted then a sting operation was set up.”

The customer was arrested after giving both the technicians and police R1 500 to be reconnected. A case of bribery has since been opened and he is detained at the Douglasdale Police Station.

“We would like to warn our customers against offering bribes to City Power officials as this is a serious criminal offence,” concluded Mangena.
