Consider joining the SA Lipizzaner student programme

KYALAMI – Applications are now open for the 10-month 2021 programme.

The South African Lipizzaners, based in Kyalami, invite community members to apply to be part of the 2021 student programme.

Current rider Jhan-Marie van den Berg said that the course runs from February to November each year and is aligned with the South African Equestrian Federation instructors plan.

Van den Berg explained, “Students learn horsemanship skills like bandaging and tacking up, they receive seat improvement lessons on lunge as well as group and individual lessons. They learn how to lunge both schooled and inexperienced horses and towards the end of their student programme, they have the opportunity to ride in the performance.”

“We pride ourselves in providing the foundation for producing leading voices in the ever-expanding equine industry. As an EQASA examination facility, we provide not only training but also convenient accessibility to the successful completion of their formal qualifications.”

Van den Berg said that for the duration of the student programme, students become actively involved in all aspects of the Lipizzaner centre and become integral members of the team, learning key skills valued nationally and internationally.

Students take part in a series of lectures designed to impart theoretical knowledge of classical riding and training. Following on from that, students are also taught these movements and methods on schoolmasters and young stallions at the centre.

“We focus on correct, classical riding position and students are also given seat-improvement lunge lessons on our stallions. Our goal is to develop riders that are effective, knowledgeable and compassionate in both their seat and training methods.

“Students graduate the programme feeling fulfilled, challenged and confident in their ability to go on in either a professional or personal capacity to become valued contributors to the equine industry as a whole.”
