HeronBridge Grade 3s learn about trees

NIETGEDACHT – Grade 3 learners had fun learning about trees and designing Spring Day outfits.

Grade 3 learners at HeronBridge College explored the great outdoors during their first two weeks of term, delving into the theme of spring and trees.

Grade 3 teacher Lorryne McMillian explained, “The activity kicked off with a nature walk, exploring our beautiful campus in search of a tree that each child could ‘adopt’. Time was spent sitting under ‘their’ tree, taking in everything they could hear, smell, feel and see, recording their sensory experience and the reason for their choice.”

Learners used the Candide app to identify their trees and completed a research project on their adopted tree. McMillian said this enquiry-based learning approach was something that the prep school intentionally facilitated with its learners.

“The approach allows pupils to explore a topic in a way that makes sense to them and encourages learning through understanding.”

Learners used their creativity and out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration to team up and personalise their tree, decorating it in their own unique way. They were then asked to demonstrate their ability to design clothing using reused or recycled paper. Learners designed ties, skirts, shirts and hats that they could wear to celebrate Spring Day.
