Covid-19: 35 812 cases, 755 deaths and 18 313 recoveries
The Eastern Cape now has the second-highest number of Covid-19 infections and deaths.
The total number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa sits at 35 812 with 755 deaths and 18 313 recoveries.
Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize reported that on 2 June, 50 more deaths had been recorded.
The Western Cape remains the province with the highest number of Covid-19 cases (65.9 per cent of the total number), while the Eastern Cape sits in second place (12.1 per cent), closely followed by Gauteng (11.9 per cent).
The provincial breakdown of cases is as follows:
- Eastern Cape – 4 324 cases
- Free State – 299 cases
- Gauteng – 4 276 cases
- KwaZulu-Natal – 2 637 cases
- Limpopo – 193 cases
- Mpumalanga – 132 cases
- North West – 271 cases
- Northern Cape – 91 cases
- Western Cape – 23 583 cases
A total of 761 534 tests have been conducted so far, while 18 792 tests were conducted since the last report.

The Western Cape also leads with the number of deaths (568), with the Eastern Cape in second (88) and KwaZulu-Natal recording the third-highest total (53).
The provincial breakdown is as follows:
- Eastern Cape – 88 deaths, 2 123 recoveries
- Free State – 8 deaths, 123 recoveries
- Gauteng – 33 deaths, 2 060 recoveries
- KwaZulu-Natal – 53 deaths, 1 248 recoveries
- Limpopo – 3 deaths, 145 recoveries
- Mpumalanga – 0 deaths, 86 recoveries
- North West – 1 death, 33 recoveries
- Western Cape – 568 deaths, 12 436 recoveries.
The gender distribution of deaths sits at 53 per cent male and 47 per cent female. The highest percentage of deaths were of people between the ages of 50 and 69.
