SA Lipizzaners introduce bay stallion Siglavy Arva I

KYALAMI – During lockdown the Lipizzaners have cancelled their weekly performances, resulting in a large drop in funding to feed the stallions.

Today’s lockdown Lipizzaner profile introduces Siglavy Arva I – one of three dark brown stallions in the team.

According to volunteer Gina Boxley, it is a fallacy to believe that a Lipizzaner can only be white.

Brown Lipizzaner stallions, known as bay stallions, are extremely rare horses.

“Their blue bloodlines go way back and it’s considered good luck to have at least one bay Lipizzaner in the stables. We are fortunate enough to have three. They are not always given the recognition they deserve, so I am holding them in the highest regard and respect and hope that you will too,” said Boxley.

Conversano Arva is the most experienced bay Lippizaner in Kyalami.

Today’s stallion, 17-year-old Siglavy Arva I is described by Boxley as very handsome with fine features.

“He is adored by all who have had the honour of performing with him. Siglavy Arva I is kind to all the trainee riders and gives them a lot to think about when teaching them his moves.

“He is an elegant side-saddle performer, reminding us all of the by-gone days of elegant female posture.

“Shona McVey is his present rider and the two of them look like they were born to perform as one.”

Boxley said Siglavy Arva I loves carrots and ‘talks’ when he wants more, giving people funny faces when he is in a playful mood.

He is proudly sponsored by Boxley and Mike Brown.

Members of the public are encouraged to support the South African Lipizzaners, based in Kyalami, in any way they can during lockdown.
