Covid-19: Gauteng records 2 521 cases, 1 840 recoveries and 29 deaths

Two further deaths have taken place in the province since 21 May, bringing the total number of deaths to 29.

The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that the total number of Covid-19 cases in Gauteng on 22 May sits at 2 521 with 1 840 recoveries.

A total of 73 people are currently hospitalised in public and private facilities with the virus.

Out of a total of 11 387 contacts traced (these are individuals who were in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19), 8 895 people have completed the 14-day monitoring period with no symptoms and have therefore been de-isolated.

The breakdown per district is as follows:

  • Johannesburg: 1 313 cases with 40 new cases, 14 deaths and 1 081 recoveries
  • Ekurhuleni: 565 cases with 14 new cases, eight deaths and 430 recoveries
  • Tshwane: 361 cases with eight new cases, four deaths and 264 recoveries
  • Sedibeng: 43 cases with no new cases, no deaths and 20 recoveries
  • West Rand: 79 cases with no new cases, three deaths and 45 recoveries
  • Unallocated: 160 cases and two new cases.

Johannesburg (1 313)

Region A (Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Dainfern, Midrand, Lanseria, Fourways, Ivory Park): 180 cases and 175 recoveries

Region B (Randburg, Rosebank, Emmarentia, Greenside, Melville, Mayfair, Northcliff, Parktown, Parktown North): 197 cases and 163 recoveries

Region C (Roodepoort, Constantia Kloof, Northgate, Florida, Bram Fischerville): 106 cases and 82 recoveries

Region D (Doornkop, Soweto, Dobsonville, Protea Glen): 136 cases and 99 recoveries

Region E (Alexandra, Wynberg, Sandton, Orange Grove, Houghton): 305 cases and 272 recoveries

Region F (Inner City, Johannesburg South): 168 cases and 132 recoveries

Region G (Orange Farm, Weilers Farm, Ennerdale, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Protea South): 83 cases and 73 recoveries

Ekurhuleni North 2 (Bedfordview, Benoni, Boksburg, Chief Albert Luthuli, Dan Kubheka, Edenvale, Endayeni, Esangweni, Itireleng, Kemston, Lethabong, Ramaphosa, Reiger Park, Van Dyk Park): 121 cases and 133 recoveries

*Note: The Gauteng Department of Health has explained the reason for the number of recoveries exceeding the number of total cases in Ekurhuleni North 2 is that some of the patients who reside in Ekurhuleni North 1 were seen in Ekurhuleni North 2.
