As of 30 April, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Gauteng is 1 446.

The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed on 1 May that the total number of coronavirus cases in the province as on 30 April was 1 446 with 948 recoveries and 11 deaths.

According to a statement from the department, “Out of a total of 8 482 contacts traced (these are individuals who were in contact with people who tested positive for Covid-19), 5 837 people have completed the 14 days monitoring period with no symptoms reported and therefore they are de-isolated.”

The department stated that 72 people are currently hospitalised with the virus in the public and private sectors.

“We pay special tribute on this Workers’ Day to thousands of workers, especially those at the forefront of the battle against the coronavirus. The dedication and sacrifice made by these workers in the face of adversity is commendable,” read the statement.

The Gauteng Department of Health said they had been in consultation with the Department of e-Government to ensure the speedy resolution to the payment of commuted overtime and claims for seasonal allowances. E-Government has also committed to upscaling its operations to eradicate delays in the processing of payments.

The MEC for Health Dr Bandile Masuku said the situation was ‘deeply regrettable and unacceptable’ and promised consequence management for officials responsible for the delay.

“The last thing workers should worry about in the middle of an intense fight to stop the further spread of Covid-19 is whether or not they will be able to provide for their families at the end of the month,” said Masuku.
