Locals work to #WarmUpJozi during lockdown

JOBURG– An initiative created to give the less fortunate much-needed items is reaching out to all communities.

For the past three years, one resident has worked to help the less fortunate in all areas, and has reached out to Fourways and Douglasdale residents to help.

Razad Goolam is an accountant manager at an IT company and runs the initiative with his wife, Kirana and a work colleague. Through his Christian beliefs, he said he tried to do his bit to help those around him.

Goolam was walking through a shopping centre when he saw a displaced person on a cold night. He and his then girlfriend bought some food for the man and thus the #WarmJoziUp initiative was created.

“I had reached out to some of my friends to help in terms of items and money to donate, and they really came through. Since then, we wanted to continue trying to make a difference,” said Goolam.

People are not only encouraged to donate food, old clothes and blankets, but anything they can give such as money or food vouchers. The initiative runs during the winter months from April to July as it was a ‘more vulnerable time’ for displaced people.

“It’s incredibly difficult to see people on the side of the road. We can easily spend money in stores and restaurants, but it’s up to us to assist others who aren’t able to [look after themselves].

“In Kwa-Zulu Natal the initiative is also being run… It is something that is growing and is great to witness.”

Goolam said in the past few years the response had been outstanding with people contacting him to get involved. His local church and several businesses also got involved.

“With the lockdown, things have been a little bit more difficult as people are starting to feel the pinch as we can’t go and buy the items and pick up items we would usually get. But we are still always grateful at what people can give to help.”

The initiative also donates to various charities and shelters and a goal for Goolam is for the initiative to operate all year round.

“We currently pay out of our own pockets with the help of others donating. It would be great to get more businesses involved.”
