Bridge learner beats U9 record for freestyle

BEVERLEY – At the Small Schools Gala held recently, the Bridge School learner Jordan Peringuey managed to break the record for the U9 freestyle race.

It was a splashing good time for the children of the Bridge Assisted Learning School recently when they competed in the Small Schools Gala.

The event, which took place at Northcliff High School, is held annually and allows children from six of the smaller primary schools in Johannesburg to compete against one another in a variety of swimming styles and age groups. The Bridge transported three buses full of nervous and excited learners to the event, which for many of the school’s children was the first time that they had ever swam in an Olympic-sized pool.

“They were overwhelmed with excitement when we arrived, and they got to see what they would be swimming in,” explained Kayla Kramer, one of the teachers who attended the event.

“The day started off with a bang as the races got underway

. The children and teachers had a blast singing war cries and supporting their schools throughout the day and of course, swimming their particular races.”

One Bridge learner who made a particularly big splash was Jordan Peringuey, who managed to beat the previous U9 record for freestyle when he completed his race with a time of 21.16 seconds.

“It was a tough competition and the Bridge managed to come third overall on the day,” added Kyle Nerf, another Bridge teacher.

“As an assisted learning school, we are really proud of our children for their commitment and enthusiasm to get involved in events such as this.”
