Kids get chance to shine

NIETGEDACHT – Author and poet Phile Crewe recently approached HeronBridge College in order to have the schoolchildren illustrate his work.

The children of HeronBridge College recently got to put their art skills to the test.

Phil Crewe, an author of a children’s book of poetry, approached HeronBridge a few months ago to ask if the school would be able to collaborate with him. Having close connections to HeronBridge, with both his children and grandchildren attending the school, he felt it would be special if the children at HeronBridge could illustrate his poems.

In November 2019, head of art in the prep school, Caron Andrews, organised a drawing competition from grades 1 to 7.

“During the school’s enrichment week, Phil came into the school and did poetry readings for each grade,” explained Candice Gibson, the marketing co-coordinator for the school.

“Mrs Andrews then inspired and motivated the children with drawing prompts and ideas. The children were all given an opportunity to illustrate the poems.

“The results were outstanding! There were over 600 entries and an enormous amount of talent to choose from.”

After great deliberation, the finalists were selected, and from there, the overall winner.

The finalists were as follows:

• Isabel Kaluba (Grade 3)

• Neena Coggon (Grade 5)

• Kyle Fish (Grade 6)

• Tyler Muller (Grade 6)

• Erin Taylor (Grade 6)

• Maxine Biggs (Grade 7)

• Eden Minnaar (Grade 7)

• Keira Taylor (Grade 7).

Each of the finalists received art supplies hamper worth R450.

“The overall winner was Zara-Chloe Winter in Grade 7. She has won art supplies hamper to the value of R1 500 and has been chosen to illustrate the whole book of poems, which will be published at some point in the future.

“Congratulations to all our prizewinners. We’d like to thank Mr Crewe for investing in HeronBridge and for giving our children this wonderful opportunity,” Gibson concluded.
