Captain Khumalo’s safety tips for kids

FOURWAYS – A friendly puppet named Captain Khumalo teaches children his five golden rules for safety in an effort to fight crime and address social issues in Johannesburg.

Police stations across the greater Fourways area make a concerted effort to engage with the community around safety and crime issues, a matter that isn’t just a concern for adults.

On 11 February members of the Douglasdale Police Station, along with Captain Granville Meyer of the Sandton Police Station, visited Witkoppen Primary School on William Nicol Drive in order to talk to the young children about safety (Kids learn about safety, published Week ending 21 February). Meyer brought along his puppet friend Captain Khumalo, who he created as part of a programme designed to educate young children about safety and social issues in an age-appropriate way, in order to engage the children.

During the visit, Captain Khumalo shared his five golden rules for children to follow, which are as follows:

  •  You must never get into a stranger’s car, as it may not be safe to do so.
  •  If a stranger tries to offer you anything – sweets, toys or other gifts – do not accept them.
  •  When you’re in your home and the doorbell rings, never open the door yourself. Rather tell an adult that someone is at the door so that they can open it and talk to the person on the other side.
  •  Always let an adult know where you are. We all like playing outside with our friends, but before you do let an adult know where you are going and who you will be with.
  •  Your body is private and does not belong to anyone else. No one must touch you in your private areas, and if this is happening to you please tell a trusted adult about the situation.
