Some facts around suicide during Ten Suicide Prevention Week

FOURWAYS – As the world marks Teen Suicide Prevention Week, the Fourways Review has put together some facts about the issue, as ways that you can help adolescents in need.

Teen Suicide Prevention Week runs from 16 to 23 February, and Fourways Review has put together some information about suicide.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) urges parents, teachers, friends and others who interact with adolescents to be willing and able to notice early warning signs for mental illness, ask the right questions and get children the help they need before it’s too late.

According to researchers, an estimated 9.5 per cent of teen deaths are as a result of suicide. Photo: Supplied

The Sadag website has an entire page dedicated to the issue, where you can go to find out more about potential warning signs and what to do if you are concerned.

You can find it here.

On 21 February, Sadag has organised for members of the public to listen to psychologists Daniella Matthews and Curwyn Mapaling discuss the issue during their weekly #FacebookFriday Q & A session on social media. Matthews will be speaking from 1pm to 2pm while Mapaling will be on from 7pm to 8pm.
