Four children from HeronBridge College showed off their smarts at the Kids’ Lit Quiz recently when they qualified to compete in the final round of the competition later this month.
The Kids’ Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for learners between 10 and 13 years old. It was founded by New Zealand quizmaster Wayne Mills, who reads enough books to write several thousand questions each year.
Quizzes are held in South Africa and 10 other countries.
In the regional rounds (HeronBridge takes part in the Pretoria round) teams of four learners are asked to answer 100 questions on children’s literature divided into 10 categories, which vary each year. The quizmaster, Wayne Mills, reads out each question with one learner writing down the answer after consultation with the rest of the team.

This year some of the categories included animal owners; beards, beverages, blindness, classics and clothing.
The winning team from each heat competes in a national final, which HeronBridge will participate in on 29 February.
The National Final is a verbal quiz using a buzzer system. It consists of five categories with between 12 and 15 questions in each category and all teams start with 10 points. The questions, beginning with the obscure and moving to the obvious, are read out by the quizmaster and once a team suspects they know the answer they push a buzzer.
The first team to buzz can answer, getting two points for a correct answer but losing a point should the answer be incorrect.
