Crime bulletin in Sector 4 Midrand

MIDRAND – Seven crime incidents, including a number of thefts, were reported in Sector 4 between 24 December and 6 January, according to Midrand police.


In the first crime bulletin of the new year, Sergeant Matome Tlamela of the Midrand Police Station said seven crime incidents had been reported in Sector 4 between 24 December 2019 and 6 January. Sector 4 includes the suburbs of Glenferness, Kyalami, Barbeque Downs and Blue Hills.

Guard assaulted by boss

A case of common assault was reported on 24 December in the Barbeque Downs area. A security guard working at a housing complex in the area apparently received a call from his manager at about 9pm, asking him to go to a certain unit within the complex, turn off the unit’s DB box (the board that distributes electricity to a building) and padlock it so that it could not be turned back on. He did as he was told but was confronted by a group of eight people from the unit about his actions. The guard explained that he was just following orders, and gave the group the contact details for his manager. Some time later, the manager called the guard, asked him why he had told the clients that the manager ordered his actions, and allegedly fired the guard. Later the manager arrived at the complex to talk to the guard, they got into an argument and the manager allegedly slapped the guard in the face with an open hand four times.

Couple robbed at shopping centre

A case of armed robbery was reported on 30 December in the Kyalami area. At about 2.45pm, a man and his wife parked their silver BMW at a shopping centre in the area to do some shopping. After shopping, the couple returned to the vehicle and were driving away when a white Audi stopped in front of their car. Two men exited the other vehicle, with one going up to the passenger window and the other to the driver’s window. Both were brandishing firearms and demanded that the victims hand over their jewellery. They also grabbed the BMW car keys before fleeing the scene, taking about R200 000 worth of items with them. Investigations into the incident are still continuing.

Six men burgle restaurant

A case of business burglary was reported on 30 December in the Kyalami Downs area. Midrand police were called to a restaurant in the area first thing in the morning by a security guard working in the area who discovered on his rounds that a window of the restaurant had been smashed open. When police and the restaurant owner entered the premises, they discovered that a mobile safe had been stolen. One of the other security guards in the area reported that he saw a group of about six men fleeing the scene and climbing over the perimeter fence to get onto the R55. No arrests have yet been made.

Man’s house ransacked while he’s on holiday

A case of housebreaking and theft was reported on 1 January in the Kyalami area. A man had left his home on Hawthorne Road on 14 December to travel to Limpopo for the festive season, locking up his property before leaving. When he returned on 1 January at about 4.30pm, he discovered that the entrance to the house had been broken open and a 40 inch TV, groceries, bedding, cosmetics, his clothes as well as some of his girlfriend’s clothes had been stolen to the value of about R24 000. The items were insured.

Woman’s bag stolen in the middle of the night

A case of housebreaking and theft was reported on 1 January in the Kyalami area. A couple were sleeping in their home on Begonia Road and at about 4am the wife was awoken by the sound of a dog barking. Her husband woke up and walked around the house to check on the noise and found that a window to the property had been broken and that his wife’s handbag had been taken. The bag contained the woman’s wallet, bank cards, driver’s licence and ID and was valued at about R7 000. No suspects have been arrested.

Car’s battery stolen out of garage

A case of theft was reported on 4 January in the Kyalami area. At about 8.30am, a man living on Rose Road went into his garage to check his truck. When looking at the vehicle, he discovered that the car’s battery (worth R1 400) had been stolen and contacted the police. On further investigation, the man found no signs of forced entry, no footprints in the garden and police could not locate any fingerprints at the scene. No arrests have yet been made.

Would-be thief thwarted

A case of attempted housebreaking and theft was reported on 6 January at a guesthouse in the Glenferness area. A woman sleeping on the property was awoken at about 3.25am to noises outside the house which she got up to investigate. When walking around the house, she noticed that one of the windows had been broken and screamed for help. The guesthouse owner responded to her screams and determined that someone had broken the window in an attempt to steal a computer screen in the room. The man and woman noticed that the intruder had injured himself as they found blood on the floor in the room. No one has been arrested in relation to the incident.
