DA MP shot in Dainfern

DAINFERN – Police are appealing to the public for information after they confirmed that Cameron Mackenzie, a MP for the DA, was injured during an attempted robbery in the Dainfern area.

Police have confirmed that a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance (DA), Cameron Mackenzie, was shot and injured in the Dainfern area during an attempted robbery on 7 January.

On 8 January Natasha Mazzone, the chief whip for the DA, released a press statement on the political party’s website regarding the incident, which was an armed robbery. The statement explained that Mackenzie had been shot in the shoulder and was recovering after surgery. She also decried the crime rate in South Africa and urged police to act swiftly to find the perpetrators.

When contacted for comment, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service, provided a statement to the Fourways Review.

“Police are searching for suspects following an attempted armed robbery at an estate in the Douglasdale police area on 7 January,” the statement read. “Prelimary reports suggest that the 59-year-old victim [Mackenzie] was followed by a red VW Golf up to the residential complex.”

A suspect from the vehicle allegedly emerged from the Golf and followed the victim into the complex.

“A struggle between the victim and suspected ensued and a shot was allegedly fired by the suspect, striking the victim on his upper body.”

The suspect ran back to the Golf, got in and fled the scene. Mackenzie was rushed to hospital to treat his injuries and police are still investigating the matter.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects is urged to report to the police,” Peters’ statement concluded.

Anyone with information can contact the Douglasdale Police Station on 011 699 1300.
