Christmas sewage woes for Fourways residents

FOURWAYS – Residents around Fourways Mall have had a smelly Christmas as a sewage leak affects the area. Councillor David Foley explains what has been happening.

Residents around Fourways Mall once again had a smelly Christmas after a sewage leak in the area started on 18 December.

According to Ward 94 councillor David Foley, the leak overflow starts at the corner of Witkoppen Road and William Nicol Drive and was caused by a blockage nearby, which blocked the pipes, meaning that sewage cannot flow normally and instead is overflowing.

He added that while the overflow affects his Ward, the root of the issue is actually a blockage in Ward 93, and as such he and Candice James (councillor for 93) had been working to find a solution.

“This is impacting Fourways Mall, Fairfield Estate and Fourways Gardens,” he said. “I reported this to the Randburg depot for Joburg Water [on 18 December].”

Similar issues have been reported around the mall over the last year or so.

Foley explained that on 23 December Joburg Water sent out a special machine in order to dig to fix the problem, as the hole needed to be deep. Unfortunately, the team was unable to clear the blockage on 23 December and had to return on 24 December to continue the work.

The work didn’t stop on Christmas either – from 9am on 25 December a contractor was on-site to repair the damaged sewage pipes. Foley is hopeful that the work will conclude soon.

“Excavations were concluded yesterday but were filled with sewage overflow,” he explained. “Pumps will be brought in today [26 December] to clear the trench and hopefully divert overflow into the sewage system lower down the line for repairs to continue.”
