Over 100 arrested during Safer Festive Season operations

DIEPSLOOT – Four of the suspects were arrested in Diepsloot for the possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition.

The long weekend saw a total of 107 suspects being nabbed for various offences in various policing precincts including Diepsloot and Douglasdale.

According to a statement released by Captain Tinyiko Mathebula, the spokesperson for the Diepsloot Police Station, suspects were arrested for offences ranging from possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition, dealing in drugs, drunk driving, rape and others.

Safer Festive Season operations were conducted across seven policing precincts to ensure that people have a safe long weekend.

The statement said,” The highlight of the arrests made over the weekend arose when four male suspects, between the ages of 23 and 47, were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition in the Diepsloot policing precinct.

“On 15 December, members received information about suspects who were terrorising businesses around Diepsloot. Members acted on the information and swiftly proceeded to the address where suspects were spotted. A team which comprised Johannesburg Flying Squad, JMPD K9 and Diepsloot Crime Prevention tactically cornered the suspects along the N14. Upon searching the suspects, the members found two unlicensed firearms and live ammunition. Four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.”

The statement said that all suspects will soon appear in the Randburg and Roodepoort magistrates courts.
