One dead after mob justice attack in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT – Diepsloot police have urged residents not to take matters into their own hands after an alleged robber died during an incident of mob justice.

Diepsloot police have urged the community not to take the law into their own hands when they have apprehended suspects. This after an incident of mob justice was reported in the area leading to the death of an alleged robber, according to the station’s spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula.

She explained that on the afternoon of 4 December, police received a complaint of mob justice in progress in Diepsloot Ext 3. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found a man lying on the ground and bleeding profusely with a firearm lying next to him. It is alleged that the man had robbed a shop in the area with his two accomplices, who both managed to escape unscathed.

The shopowner shop claimed he was outside when he heard noises inside. He went back into the premises and saw three suspects, two of whom were armed with firearms. When someone screamed for help, members of the community came to the location and allegedly assaulted the suspect using stones and sticks.

“Mob justice is a criminal offence and we therefore urge the community to contact the police when they have caught suspects,” said Mathebula.
