Ready, set, think!

NIETGEDACHT – Ready, set, learn! The Grade 4s from HeronBridge College recently tested their brain muscles during the school's annual Grade 4 Mini-Maths Olympics.

Maths can be fun, just ask the Grade 4s at HeronBridge College.

The school’s annual Grade 4 Mini-Maths Olympics took place on 19 November. This programme was put into place four years ago and aligns with one of their strategic goals of providing an education that leaves children thirsty for more – what better way to achieve that than to ensure content is learnt, assessed and consolidated in a fun, hands-on way.

The concept of fractions and measurement had been taught via many practical stations in class and it was now time to consolidate this knowledge.

The day began with the learners being placed into groups but they were each working individually on their scores. Along with the help of many moms, dads, grannies and sisters, the learners moved through a variety of stations that required them to apply their learnt knowledge. Paper plate discus, cotton ball shot-put and paper straw javelin saw the children ‘flexing their muscles’, estimating their toss or throw and then measuring to see their actual length and compare this to their estimated answers.

The suck and spit, left-handed sponge squeeze and forearm marble grab allowed them to show off their knowledge of mass and capacity while the ring toss, six-pin bowling and grassy golf tested their familiarity of fractions.

The Grade 4 teachers, who are always researching new and innovative ways to make learning meaningful, said that the day was inspired by the Fraction Olympics they found on Pinterest, which they adapted to suit their needs.

While the event’s focus was more on developing intrinsic motivation, healthy competition also has its place, and so the winner will be announced during the Grade 4 quality time slot later in the term.
