Dainfern College demonstrates the spirit of giving

DAINFERN – When Kirsten Roberts from Dainfern College saw the school's recycler at the mercy of the elements, she decided to build him shelter for his work.

Small acts of kindness can change the world. Grade 11 learner and head of environmental affairs at Dainfern College, Kirsten Roberts recently led an initiative to build a shelter for Gift Nkawa, the school’s recycler of Bekabee Recycling, at the college’s recycling centre.

“It was brought to my attention that Mr Nkawa, a gentleman who sorts through our school’s waste for recyclable items, had a very basic shelter that didn’t protect him from the harsh weather conditions – it merely gave him some shade and protection from light rain,” Kirsten explained. “I believe that Mr Nkawa deserved a proper shelter to protect him from the sometimes harsh environment he is helping us save.”

Kirsten partnered with the school’s Round Square representative Sonia Claassen to donate the new shelter. Round Square is worldwide association of about 200 schools where children commit to personal growth and responsibility.

Kirsten is already displaying her passion for her chosen leadership portfolio. She also recently mobilised a group of high school learners and joined Coastal Ghost on a riverside clean-up of the Braamfontein Spruit.

Dainfern College thanks Kirsten for her awareness and hard work, and the staff look forward to supporting her future initiatives.
