‘Bogus’ security guards arrested

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale police arrested 11 security guards on 20 October as the station gears up for the end-of-year season.

On 30 October Douglasdale police arrested 11 security guards working for two separate security companies for the contravention of Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority Act (PRSIRA).

According to a statement, this joint operation between the police and PSIRA members was part of the festive season operation where the police clamp down on illegally-operating security companies which are mushrooming in the policing precinct. Among the arrested suspects, one was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as unlicensed ammunition.

Brigadier Veeshani Arikum, Station Commander for the Douglasdale Police Station said, “We urge all security companies to ensure compliance with all regulations.”

She added that companies that fail to comply will face the full might of the law.

The suspects will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon, and police investigations are continuing. Douglasdale police encourage the community to keep reporting crime to the station.
