Cops arrest men for gun possession, other crimes

DOUGLASDALE – Douglasdale police officers have arrested three suspects in two separate incidents for possession of unlicensed firearms and other crimes.

Douglasdale police arrested three suspects in connection with two different incidents on the same day.

Two suspects, aged 21 and 22, were arrested for armed robbery, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a dangerous weapon. According to the station, on 24 October at about 8pm Douglasdale Police Station officers were patrolling the North Riding area when they were approached by a 24-year-old man who was bleeding heavily from the head.

The man informed the police that he had just been attacked and robbed of two cell phones and cash while walking along the street by unknown armed suspects who also threatened him with a knife and hit him on the head with a firearm. The police officers swiftly reacted to the complaint and started a manhunt for the suspects, who were spotted in the Northlands area.

The suspects were searched and found to be in possession of one of the victim’s cell phones, and a knife and firearm were also recovered.

In the second incident, the Douglasdale police are investigating a case of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition after a suspect, a man aged 26, was arrested on 24 October at about 3am.

In this incident, it is alleged that police officers were patrolling around the Kya Sands informal settlement when they came across five suspicious men walking down the street. When the men spotted the officers’ police vehicle, they ran away into different directions. The officers gave chase and managed to corner one of the suspects. He was searched and found to be in possession of an unlicensed pistol and three live rounds.

The other four suspects are still at large.

The station commander for the Douglasdale Police Station, Brigadier Veeshani Arikum, applauded the quick response of the officers and their commitment to fighting crime.

“Licensed firearm owners must always ensure the safekeeping of their firearms, and also report them immediately to the nearest police station if they are lost,” Arikum added.

The three suspects arrested will appear at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon, and investigations are continuing.

Douglasdale police encourage the community to keep reporting crime to the station.
