Young soccer stars shine

DOUGLASDALE – As their 2019 soccer season comes to a close, the Bryanston Warriors Football Club hosted their annual general meeting and awards ceremony on 19 October.

Young soccer players of Bryanston Warriors Football Club have been honoured as the club’s year came to a close.

On 19 October, the club finished its year with a special event hosted at Kings College and New Covenant Church on Hornbill Road in Douglasdale, where the club is based. On the day, the club held its AGM to select a new executive committee for the club, and also invited players and their families to attend a special awards ceremony to mark the soccer players’ achievements and progress in the game.

Coach Moses ‘Moe’ Mathopa, who coaches the U7s, will celebrate 10 years with the Bryanston Warriors Football Club next year. “The 2019 season started a bit slow but definitely picked up momentum. I think my 10th year will be better than this year,” he said. Photo: Robyn Kirk

Gerald Schulz, the vice-chairman of the club said, “Each child will receive a participation trophy from their coach as we like to make the children feel excited about being involved.

“Then we have a number of special awards that we’re handing out – the most improved player in each age group (selected by the coaches), the Warrior’s Warrior Award, the Coach’s Player of the Season Award (which the coach selects for each team), awards for the top midfielder in each age category, top defender in each category, the top striker in each category, as well as the top goalkeeper and goal scorer in each category.

Schulz added that the Warrior’s Warrior Award winner was not selected by the coaches but was voted for by the other players in the club.

“This award is not necessarily the best soccer player, but rather the player which enshrines the ethos of the club. We’re also handing out four special awards to players who made the district team.”

The club works with both boys and girls from U6 up to U19, as well as a senior team for players who are older. Looking back on the year, head coach Senzo Nduli was proud of what the players had learned and achieved.

“It’s been a very special year,” he told Fourways Review after the awards ceremony had concluded. “The club has grown in numbers and a lot of the kids have developed in amazing ways and are actually ready to compete at a higher level.

“Next year I’d like to see the club get the players to a point where they can release them to other clubs because they are so good.”

The club will hold an early bird registration for the 2020 season on 16 November from 11am to 1pm at Kings College grounds, and another registration day in February next year.
