K46 completion will start in March 2020, says department spokesperson

DIEPSLOOT – The new tender to finally complete the K46 stretch of road will be advertised on 18 October, according to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.

Finally some good news about the K46 – the tender to finish its work will come out on 18 October, and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT) hopes that work will be completed by late 2021.

The stretch of road, which runs from William Nicol Drive to the N14 highway near the Diepsloot area, has seen no end of problems since work began in 2015, as reported in the Fourways Review article K46 is still unfinished [Week ending 15 February 2019]. It was meant to be completed by construction company Lubbe Construction in September 2017, and the contract with that company to complete the work was extended twice before the GDRT decided to blacklist Lubbe and legislate against them.

The tender process for the project had to be restarted to find a company able to complete the road.

But Theo Nkonki, a spokesperson for the GDRT, has some good news for residents and motorists. “The construction tender will be advertised on 18 October on the tender bulletin. The procurement processes are expected to be finalised by the end of January 2020, with construction expected to commence in March 2020.”

He added that the department believes that construction will take about 20 months, meaning that the road will hopefully be done by November 2021. Nkonki also addressed the fact that officials from the GDRT were currently under investigation for their alleged failure to manage the project properly.

“The disciplinary process still in process and it is anticipated to be completed at the end of the year,” he concluded.

The phone number advertised for Lubbe Construction online no longer exists, and as such the Fourways Review could not reach the company for comment.
