A performance of note

SUNNINGHILL – Some talented saxophone players from St Stithians recently visited Riverside Manor Retirement Village to play some smooth sounds for residents.

The residents of Riverside Manor Retirement Village enjoyed the smooth sounds of saxophones when the Saxes of Note band from St Stithians College visited them on 4 October.

Three Grade 9 learners from the school – Michaela Evlambiou, Christen Roux and Jordan Brown – were joined by music teacher Shirli van Vledder as they performed seven songs (along with an encore performance) during the visit.

This was not the first time that Saxes of Note band came to the complex though – five years ago the band visited the village in an effort to raise funds for a new instrument.

“I met Maureen about five years ago and she invited me and the students who were part of Saxes of Note at that time to come play for residents,” Van Vledder explained to the Fourways Review. “At the time we were trying to raise the funds to buy a new baritone sax [for the band], which Riverside residents actually helped us to do by donating at the time.

“It’s very exciting to be back, although obviously the girls performing today are not the same ones that were here five years ago. While we do a lot of internal concerts at St Stithians, it’s always nice to play to an outside and appreciative audience.”

The musicians performed a total of eight songs in the dining area of the village on the night, including an amazing cover of Queen’s song Bohemian Rhapsody on saxophone. After the performance, a hat was passed around to residents to make a donation, which raised R1 830 in total. “It was lovely for residents to enjoy the music,” explained Maureen Gravell, who is part of the Riverside Manor lifestyle committee. “And I think the band enjoyed playing for an audience who were so appreciative.”
