Sergeant Matome Tlamela, the spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, would like members of the public and the community to take note that the Firearm Registry Centre at the station is open to those who want to apply for a firearm.
“The office will be operating from 8am until 2pm from Monday to Fridays,” she told the Fourways Review. “The people who want to do firearms applications must please take note.”
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) website, before one can own a gun, one must have a firearm licence issued to them by SAPS. This is true for every gun that one possesses.
There are a number of requirements to legally own a gun, some of which are:
• In order to receive a competency certificate, potential firearm owners must be 21 years old or older, must pass a background check and may not have a criminal record for certain crimes.
• Potential firearm owners must successfully undergo the prescribed training at an accredited training institution and obtain a training proficiency certificate.
• After training, potential firearms owners must past a test in line with the Firearms Control Act of 2000.
• According to the SAPS website, a competency certificate should cost R70 and a firearm licence should cost R140.
