Youngsters are ready to lead with spirit

FOURWAYS – The new councillors of Fourways High School learned about leadership during a special camp held near the Magalies River at the beginning of September.

On 1 September the newly elected Fourways High School senior council departed for the 2019 Councilor Camp.

With excitement running high, the young leaders bussed to Parnassus Farm, located on the banks of the Magalies River surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Witswatersberg mountains where they participated in a number of team-building activities including building human pyramids, surviving obstacle courses, raft building in sub-zero-temperature water and escaping an escape room.

“We led each other blindfolded in the dark and we even carried a fellow councillor on a night hike up and down a mountain – he was on crutches and we don’t leave our teammates behind,” explained Tanvi Sujanani, a councillor in Grade 11.

“We braaied marshmallows around the bonfire, met some not-so-friendly baboons and we laughed a lot!”

The purpose of the leadership camp was to build school spirit, create a culture of personal leadership and to develop leadership skills in the councillors in order to serve the student body to the best of their abilities.

The young leaders returned on 4 September with exciting and innovative ideas to improve the spirit of the student body and with a readiness to serve the school.

Sujanani concluded, “A massive thank you to Mrs. Borrill-Fombe, Mr. Clayton, Mr. Neilson, Mrs. Dros, and Ms. Badham for their time, preparation, planning, insight, wisdom, and sense of humor on the camp. It was a few days (away from the hustle and bustle of school life) that we will remember for a long time!”
