Safety first for riders

BROADACRES – Cyclists of Fourways unite to enjoy a safe cycling experience in the Broadacres area now that Safe Cycle Rides has launched in Johannesburg.

The first-ever Safe Cycle Ride came to Broadacres on 11 August, giving the cycling community of the area a chance to enjoy the sport together and safely.

The Safe Cycle Ride initiative is a collaboration between Mugg and Bean and Cycle Lab as a way for cyclists of varying levels to enjoy a nice ride together in safety as the route is monitored by marshals and safety vehicles. The first of its kind in Johannesburg, the ride from Broadacres began at 7am on the day and allowed participants to take on a 60km ride before returning to the Mugg and Bean Broadacres starting point for a free cup of cappuccino courtesy of the restaurant.

“Many cyclists join us [Mugg and Bean] on weekend mornings for a refreshment after a hard ride, so we wanted to give something back to this community for the support,” Thulani Mahlangu, brand manager for the Mugg and Bean sit down division told the Fourways Review on the day of the ride. “All rides are marshal-led, which means that there is somebody making sure that the riders are safe.”

Mahlangu added that it was free to register to participate in the rides which also fitted in with the Mugg and Bean brand values of community, generosity, supporting healthy lifestyles and helping the environment.

“About 46 riders have taken part in today’s event including social media influencer Khethiwe Mlangeni of PopUpGym.

From now on the rides will be held at the Broadacres Mugg and Bean every two weeks. It’s a place not only for those who are already involved with cycling, but also a place for those interested in cycling to come try it out.”

Going forward, there will be more than one route for cyclists to choose from – 40km, 60km and 80km routes will be available. “Today’s route took us to the Cradle [of Humankind] and is probably suited to intermediate riders,” said Sven Pederson, the general manager for Cycle Lab Active and who was one of the cyclists who took part. “It wasn’t too chilly out there and it was nice to have an experienced marshal to look after everyone.”

If you would like to register for the next Safe Cycle Ride from Broadacres Mugg and Bean, visit their website www.safecycleride.co.za or download the Mugg and Bean Generosity app. There will be rides in other parts of the city too.
