Needed support is given to Mandela’s hospital

BRYANSTON – Learners have hosted fundraising efforts for the hospital since 2013.

Learners of Brescia House School showed their support for Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital at the opening of its gift and coffee shop.

Learners have been showing their support for the hospital since 2013 when they joined the For Kids, By Kids campaign. During the campaign, the learners hosted cupcake sales at their school with all the funds raised going to the hospital. Due to their long-standing support for the hospital, girls of the school have been invited to attend many of the hospital’s events over the years.

Liz Norman, the head of counselling and community outreach at the school said they ran six cake sales a year with each grade helping sell baked goods. She added that many of the school’s learners have also saved their own money to donate to the hospital. “Across the years, our primary school children have filled many small Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital piggy banks with their own pocket money and savings. These piggy banks are placed in classrooms across the primary school and children fill them whenever they feel they would like too,” said Norman.

This year the high school Serviam Committee, which does acts of community service, decided to host a small pop-up shop for the hospital where they marketed the branded goods the hospital has launched in its on-site gift shop. Norman said after the girls’ visit to the coffee and gift shop, they have been inspired to find additional ways to raise funds for the hospital.

The girls of the Serviam Committee also handed over an artwork commissioned of the hospital’s logo to celebrate the opening. Norman concluded that they will continue working on the For Kids, By Kids campaign to find new ways of raising funds for the hospital.
