Police hunt for ‘hammer’ taxi driver

FOURWAYS – JMPD and SAPS locate taxi owner whose taxi was involved in a road rage incident with a motorist, while police investigate the matter.

A violent video of a taxi driver throwing what is reportedly a hammer at a motorist on William Nicol Drive in Fourways has been the centre of discussion ever since it surfaced on 3 July.

It was alleged that the motorist witnessed a number of unlawful driving acts by the taxi driver including driving through two red traffic lights. The motorist decided to capture the alleged reckless behaviour with what is reportedly a dash camera.

This resulted in the taxi driver resorting to violence.

The video footage shows the motorist driving alongside the taxi and about 20 seconds into the video, the taxi driver can be seen reaching for an unknown item before throwing it at the passenger side of the vehicle.

The motorist then passes the taxi and the footage becomes unclear before the taxi is seen again on the driver’s side of the man’s car. The taxi appears to overtake the vehicle before rapidly slowing down.

At this point, only the underside of the steering wheel and motorist’s arms are visible. A bashing sound can be heard and shards of glass are seen falling onto the motorist as he attempts to drive away. According to a Facebook post by Future City Fourways, the motorist reportedly said, “He jumped out of his taxi with another hammer and ran to my car smashing my passenger window hitting my right hand as I tried to defend myself, he then proceeded to run around the car smashing the vehicle as he went causing thousands of rands’ damage.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela confirmed that police were currently investigating the matter.

“A case of malicious damage to property has been opened. At the moment investigations are at an advanced stage.”

According to the MMC of Public Safety Michael Sun, Metro police and police officials are closing in on the suspect. “At this stage, all I can reveal is that we have managed to locate the taxi owner,” he said. “Obviously the owner can point to us who was operating the vehicle at the time and I also spoke to the victim and I’ll further engage with him as the week proceeds.

“The matter is under investigation. We are hoping that by the end of this week we will have light on this matter. At the moment that’s all I can share, now going forward the police will deal with the matter.”
