Most readers might know Stefan Graunke as the man behind the Coastal Ghost non-profit organisation which cleans up the coastline both above and below water level. But he is also committed to cleaning up his very own neighbourhood.

On 27 June, Graunke and his three dogs Zephyr, Ksora, and Altair along with volunteers from Pinnacle College will be hosting a clean-up from the school grounds at the corner of Lynx Street and Caracal Road all the way up to William Nicol Drive. This is part of his larger goal of caring and working for the South African environment.

“Coastal Ghost does two coastal clean-ups a year, from [on land] Richard’s Bay to Cape Town, and a second one in the same area with divers,” Graunke told the Fourways Review.

“We also do clean-ups locally two times a month, which is what we’ll be doing on 27 June. It’s really to raise awareness about the environment and to pick up rubbish.”

The volunteers will spend about two hours cleaning up plastic and other litter that they come across. Bags to contain the waste, as well as gloves for volunteers, will be provided on the day. Graunke chooses the area because as a resident, travelling around the area during his daily routine, he often notices problem areas to address.

“We go to a lot of horse shows in the area, and just driving around I noted all the rubbish. This clean-up is a chance for people to make a difference – while we can’t face big problems alone, we can do something about the small ones like this.”

Members of the public are invited to lend a helping hand on 27 June. The clean-up will begin at about 10am and last around two hours. Graunke is also always looking for sponsorship for his coastal clean-ups, particularly from diving schools who are willing to help support clean-ups in the ocean.
