Police engage with youth

DOUGLASDALE – The police from Douglasdale spent Youth Day, 16 June, interacting with young people in the Msawawa and Pipeline informal settlements.

In celebration of Youth Day, officers from the Douglasdale Police Station together with congregants from St Paul’s Church of God embarked on several activities in support of the youth on 16 June.

The day was an effort to engage with youngsters around issues which affect them, such as crime and violence, and included food donations to the needy, a sporting event held on a local field, discussions around crime and public prayer.

The program started with an outreach effort at the Msawawa informal settlement, where needy families in the area were provided grocery hampers.

“We then proceeded to the Pipeline informal settlement, where a sports tournament against crime was held,” explained Captain Mpho Tshetlhane, the spokesperson for the police station.

Officers from the station’s social crime prevention team encouraged young people that they encountered to focus on their studies and to refrain from criminal activities such as drugs, substance abuse, domestic violence, assault and bullying their peers. The youngsters were also encouraged to join the Douglasdale Youth Crime Prevention Desk.

“The program ended with a divine intervention prayer, where Bishop Magoro prayed for young people,” concluded Tshetlhane.
