Hockey players from around the country come to Fourways

FOURWAYS – Over 25 and 26 May hundreds of hockey players from around the country attended a festival held at Fourways High School.

Young hockey players from across the country played their hearts out recently at Fourways High School.

Fourways High was privileged to host the largest primary school hockey tournament, the U12 and U13 Fourways High School Hockey Festival, with more than 750 boys and girls of 50 teams participating. The festival played host to the most talented U12 and U13 hockey boys and girls from North West, Eastern Gauteng, Southern Gauteng, Northern Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

“The success of this tournament is credited to our world-class facilities as well as the support of our hockey parent body who came out in numbers to ensure its success,” said Tebogo Moepye, who is in charge of boys hockey at the school.

“The marketing and brand exposure is the biggest benefit of hosting this event as the ripple effects into the school are immeasurable and priceless.

“The event has assisted the school in strengthening relationships with highly reputable brands and companies within our community, all of whom contributed to ensuring that the school could stage this spectacle. More importantly, it has assisted in the development of the school, and hockey in particular.”

Moepye added that the show of support from fellow schools within the Fourways area ensured the success of this event and was very encouraging, especially the assistance from St Stithians College, Dainfern College, Beaulieu College as well as Bryandale Primary School.

“The hockey displayed on the days was of the highest standard and, at times, beyond U12 and U13 standards.

“The marquee teams proved their worth and leading into the U13 Inter Provincial Tournament, they have us feeling very confident that Gauteng will once again emerge as national champions at this age group.

“The players, coaches, managers, parents and umpires need to be commended for ensuring that all matches were played in good spirit and that hockey reigned supreme on the days.”

Moepye also took the opportunity to announce that Fourways High School had officially been appointed by Southern Gauteng Primary Schools Hockey as the 2020 host of the festival, and hoped it would be bigger and better.
