28 learners offered work experience at Riversands Makro

FOURWAYS – Makro Riversands welcomed 28 learners for Take a Child to Work Day and taught them about the different departments in a retail store and daily operations of each.

Makro, together with the Tomorrow Trust, gave 28 Grade 11 and matric learners the opportunity to visit Makro Riversands on 30 May as part of the retailer’s annual Take a Child to Work Day programme.

The learners were exposed to the breadth of opportunities available within the retail environment including human resources, commercial, marketing, online, order fulfilment, receiving and stock control, accounts, and food.

The Tomorrow Trust is a non-profit organisation founded in 2005, which hosts Saturday and holiday schools to equip learners from disadvantaged communities with extra tutorials.

Business development manager for the Tomorrow Trust Taryn Rae said, “Often children from vulnerable backgrounds are brought up not understanding or seeing the sort of careers that are available, especially in the retail space.

“What was also so profound was how excited and passionate each staff member is about working at Makro and we’d like to thank Makro Riversands for having us.

Makro has implemented a new educational programme called M Equals Educate which allows parents to support a school of their choice by downloading the Mcard app and signing up. Parents will earn R5 for the institution of choice for every R1 000 spent, while still earning cash back for themselves.
