Steyn City School through to the quarter-finals

PAULSHOF – High school book lovers united to battle it out during the third round of the High School Book Quiz: Bragging Writes on 17 May at Skoobs.

Steyn City School won the third round of the Skoobs High School Book Quiz, which was hosted on 17 May.

A total of 11 learners in three teams put their knowledge to the test at the Skoobs booke store in Montecasino as Brescia House School, Fourways High School, and Steyn City School faced off. The High School Book Quiz: Bragging Writes are adjudicated by Read Educational Trust.

“The winner of tonight’s quiz will take part in the quarter-finals in September,” Skoobs store manager Kristen Rolsten said.

“HeronBridge College won the first round [on 15 February] and Reddam House Helderfontein won the second round [on 15 March].”

The quiz takes part in the upstairs section of Skoobs and features a total of 60 questions in six categories, split into two halves. For this quiz, a new category called ‘wizarding world’ was introduced and actress Natasha Sutherland, of Egoli, played the part of quizmaster for the second time (she was also in the role for Round 1). She told the Fourways Review that she hoped that the night would encourage the youth to read more.

The first question asked participants to name the author behind the Discworld series of books, a question easily answered correctly by the youngsters even though the first novel was published in 1983, long before any of them were born. (Answer: British author Terry Pratchett).

“The founder of the Read Educational Trust called my questions ‘deliciously difficult’ in the past, and so we’ve tried to make them a tiny bit easier. There are also some multiple-choice questions,” added Rolsten.

At the halfway point of the evening, Fourways High School was in the lead by a single point to Brescia House, with Steyn City School at the rear. By the end of the night, Steyn City School had landed on top with 33 points to Brescia House’s 27 points and moved on to the quarter-finals. The night was full of smiles and laughter.

“Our school librarian suggested we try out being part of the quiz and it’s been amazing,” said Aeryn Shanahan of the Fourways High School team.

And the learners were not afraid to put the hard work in. The winning team from Steyn City School (made up of Khumo Molefakgotla, Kemello Joyini, Sienna-Jade Naidoo and Nqobile Cele) told the Fourways Review that they had prepared for the quiz by studying together every day.

Steyn City School will face the HeronBridge College and Reddam House Helderfontein teams in the quarter-finals on 20 September.

Brescia and Fourways High will compete again in Round 4 on 19 July, which will be the final knockout round.
