Fourways athletes set for national showpiece

FOURWAYS - Fourways athletes to test their abilities against top athletes at provincial level.

Gauteng will host the 2019 South African Modern Pentathlon and Laser Run Championships and Fourways residents will be proud to learn that local A-list athletes will be competing.

Nayda Celliers and Nikita Stolarczyk of Fourways High School and Dainfern College’s siblings Regan and Riley Egbers will be participating.

The five pentathlon events will take place on 3 and 4 May at Curro Hazeldean, the Gauteng Fencing Federation and Zwavelpoort Equestrian Centre. Modern pentathlon comprises swimming, fencing, showjumping, running and shooting and offers the ultimate test of an athlete’s fitness, courage and skill.

Local organising committee member, Graham Burnett, said, “We are proud to be hosting the 2019 SA Modern Pentathlon Championships and we are looking forward to welcoming South Africa’s top athletes to Gauteng. We are working hard to ensure that this will be a superbly organised event for both athletes and spectators.”

The level of competition is expected to be very high this year as some SA athletes are world champions in various events.

The laser run discipline is held as a stand-alone SA Championships event, providing an excellent opportunity for a larger number of athletes from around the country to compete.

Top performers on the day will also be eligible to represent the pentathlon national team at the World Laser Run Championships in Hungary in September.

Junior athletes will also be eyeing positions on the national team when the continent hosts the 4th Junior Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal in 2022.
