Thousands of Joburg Metro police officers deployed for elections

JOBURG – A total of 3 000 Metro police officers including 200 traffic wardens will deployed in various areas to ensure smooth elections on 8 May.

A total of 3 000 Metro police officers, including 200 traffic wardens, will deployed in various areas to ensure smooth elections today, 8 May.

Chief of the Johannesburg Metropolian Police Department, David Tembe, said the officers would ensure free flow of traffic and by-law enforcement, in line with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) programme. “We have put all the stops to make sure that the elections are safe and successful. Effective crime prevention measures will be most imperative during the election period,” said Tembe.

Over 50 officers will be deployed at the Results Operation Centre in Auckland Park until 6am on 9 May. The Artillery Road and the Henley Road would also be closed during that time. Tembe said some officers will also be responsible for escorting of ballot boxes to and from warehouses.

“I would like to encourage residents to safeguard their constitutional right to vote and report all criminal elements to law enforcement agencies,” added Tembe.
