Paulshof residents clean up the Braamfontein Spruit

Fourways - Councilor joins residents in cleaning operation

Joburg City Park and residents of Paulshof embarked on a cleaning operation of the Braamfontein Spruit on Capricorn Road. This comes after a number of citizens raised their concerns about the pollution the river is causing.

The spruit is the longest stream in Johannesburg, originating from Barnato Park High School, running through parkland, right to the outskirts of the city. The stream further flows through Riverclub, Bryanston, Rivonia and Sunninghill, with its largest tributary being the Sand Spruit, joining the streams in Sunninghill before linking with the Jukskei River in Leeuwkop Prison.

Ward 93 councillor Candice James also took part in the cleaning of the waterway. James spoke about the importance of the cleaning operation. “The community wants to look after the river, if we don’t look after these kinds of areas, they become a crime issue which is another concern. “Paulshof has had a huge surge in crime in the past when the grass got overgrown and people started living in the area.” Andria Solomon, a concerned community member who initiated this community project urges residents to take part in the next clean-up set to take place next month.
