Shavathon is a success as Joburg community pulls together

FOURWAYS – Thanks to the combined efforts of Montecasino, shoppers and Caxton staff over R28 000 was raised for Cansa at the recent Shavathon.

Montecasino let the colours tell a bright and beautiful story of community caring at the three-day Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Shavathon from 8 to 10 March in this year’s #ColouringHope movement, raising a total of R28 145 for Cansa – with people of all ages offering their heads for spraying, shaving or colouring.

The successful Shavathon was held on the Montecasino Promo Stage where the team was joined by Caxton staff, who took over the shaving, colouring, and spraying duties for an hour as part of their Caxton Cares programme (as reported in the article Caxton gives back, published Week ending 15 March), while Jacaranda FM ran an outside broadcast from the Shavathon area, encouraging participation and keeping entertainment levels high.

Celebrities joined the caring movement too, and those who sprayed, shaved, assisted with volunteering tasks, or raised awareness to encourage people to support the valuable initiative included blogger Liesel de Bruin, Cliff Pinto who runs the Pig Spotter account on Twitter, Candice Robbertze who is a former Mrs SA, Uveka Rangappa the TV presenter, Rikki Brest who works as a model and drummer and Hildegard Whites who acts on 7de Laan.

Mike Page the operations director and complex general manager of Montecasino, recently handed over the cheque to Thea Wille who is a Cansa community mobiliser. The funds will be used by the organisation to support those fighting the disease, as well as for educating the public on cancer.

“The Shavathon is all about hope – and it’s a salute to the people in our community and our lives who’re affected by cancer,” Page said. “We were proud to be a part of such a collaborative and caring initiative.”
